Farquharson
Joseph Farquharson was born in Edinburgh on 4th May, the son of the Laird of Finzean, until his twelfth year he was only allowed to paint on a Saturday. On his birthday that year, he was given a box of paints which he soon put to good use, submitting a painting, which was accepted, to the RSA the following summer. The Scottish landscape painter and family friend Peter Graham was his art teacher for twelve years, and at 16 he enrolled in the Board of Manufacturers School in Edinburgh. In 1880 he went to study in Paris under the French master Carolus Duran where he gained a great technical skill in using broad brushwork. Between 1885-1893 he journeyed to Egypt several times, exhibiting works from these travels. However, by the early 1890s he had become the master of Scottish winter landscapes many of which he exhibited at the RA. No one has painted the north east of Scotland with more realism and understanding. Walter Sickert wrote that his treatment of snow scenes showed ‘the mark of the real painter’. Elected RA 1915. |
